Description: Rennes is the regional capital of Brittany. It has a very pleasant old quarter where you will find a massive Saturday market which is claimed to be one of the largest in France.

Location: In the extreme east of Brittany, about 75km south of St Malo via the N137 dual carriageway.

General Info: Official Rennes Website.

Our recommendations: For adults, the Musée des Beaux Arts (housed in the former university) has some excellent art galleries.  The Musée de Bretagne is housed in the same building.  The Jardin du Thabor in the Rue du Paris is impressive.

For the children: Sadly the market disappointed our family…..we’ve never seen so much choice of fish, fruit and veg…..but not a single novelty stall in sight where the children usually have fun spending their holiday allowance!  They’ll have a lot more fun in towns like Vitré or Fougères.
