Picnic Spots in the Dordogne

Here are some of our favourite picnic spots in the Dordogne, perfect for taking a bit of time out on your family holiday to enjoy the view with your tasty lunch!

Near La Roque Gageac:

There is a great picnic spot just across the river from la Roque Gageac.  Heading SE out of La Roque on the D703, turn right over the river just before Vitrac and then take the D50 heading back toward Domme.  After a short while you will find an orchard on your right hand side with a small house on the other side of the road.  Continue for another 100m where you will find a dust track leading off to the right.  This takes you back towards the river and you can park under the trees at the rear of the orchard and picnic there or, with a scrabble down a small bank, you can picnic by the river.  There are no facilities here.

Near Castlenaud:

The grounds of the Walnut Museum near Castelnaud make for a nice picnic spot.  Take the D57 across the river towards Castelnaud, follow signs for the castle and keep going up a steep and narrow winding road to the museum.

Cingle de Trémolat:

See the picture in “viewpoints”.  It is possible to picnic in the woods overlooking the Cingle de Trémolat just opposite a large hotel (now closed).  Make sure you are parked safely off the road.
