The 2016 reorganisation of the French regions saw the former Poitou Charente region amalgamated into the new Nouvelle Aquitaine region which now covers a very large part of Western France.
France for Families has broken this down into 3 smaller areas:
– Dordogne – covering the Dordogne, Lot et Garonne and the former Limousin region
– Garonne – covering the coastal area between Bordeaux and the Pyrenees
– Charente – The former Poitou Charente region between Poitiers and Bordeaux with the département of Haute Vienne added.

Search now for all the gites in the Charente that we have available for you.  Choose from our Featured Gites; select from the map or the results list; or use our search form to narrow down your selection.

Please remember to let the gite owner know that you found them through France For Families!

To ensure you get the best from your holiday, make sure you also look at our Charente Regional Travel Guide.

The area of the Charente and the Charente Maritime now forms part of the  bigger ‘Nouvelle Aquitaine’ region.  It’s an area that stretches down the south west coast of France, incorporating Limousin, Poitou-Charente and the Aquitaine. You can find out more about French regions here.

Why holiday in the Charente?

The Charente is a beautiful part of France, lots of gently undulating hills filled with grapevines and sunflowers leading to miles of golden sandy coastlines.

For a family holiday, the Charente and the Charente Maritime offers the best of both worlds – plenty of places to visit and discover the ‘real’ France combined with great beach holidays in lovely warm weather.

Weather in the Charente

For a family holiday, the weather suits those looking for summer temperatures of between 24 – 3- degrees centigrade.  The coastline is kept cool by the gently onshore breezes, whilst inland it can become quite still and hot. Head to accommodation where you can cool off in a pool or splash area, especially in August, you’ll be grateful for it!

The benefit of a gite or holiday home is that they will tend to be cooler in the hotter temperatures in this area, whereas holiday parks or campsites can feel quite hot in caravans or tents.
