Monastère de la Grande Chartreuse and La Correrie Museum

Description: The Chartreuse Monastery was founded over 920 years ago in 1084 and nowadays is known around the world on account of its famous liqueur.

Today however the Monastery, nestled in a beautiful alpine site, is home to a silent order of monks and cannot be visited.

However there is a museum nearby at La Correrie (38380 St. Pierre de Chartreuse Tel No (04) 76 88 60 45) to the south of the Monastery where the day to day routine of a monk is faithfully depicted using audio-visuals, film and photographs.

This is open every day from end May – September 10.00-18.30 and in Oct/Nov from 13.30-18.00 weekdays and 10.00-18.30 weekends and holidays.

A visit to the museum can be followed by a walk through the woods to the Monastery – about an hour round trip.

Location: The Monastery and museum are situated about 30 kms N of Grenoble to the NW of St. Pierre-de-la-Chartreuse (Michelin map 125 F4) up in the hills off the D520B.

Our recommendation: To make a full day out in the area, visit the nearby Caves de la Chartreuse.
