Description: Situated right on the eastern extremity of Brittany, Vitré is one of the best preserved medieval towns in France. The old town oozes character and will really take you back in time, with wooden facias to the houses and crowned by a magnificent château.

Location: 30km south of Fougères via the D798 / D178 and about 30km east of Rennes via the N157.

General Info: Office du Tourisme website.  Tel no: 02 99 75 04 46.  Open 10 AM – 6PM in peak season.

Our recommendations:  The castle is the place to head for in the centre of the old town, but try to plan to spend some time wandering the streets of the old town as well and if time allows, stop for a drink or an ice cream in one of the local cafes.  In peak season the tourist office organises guided tours at 10PM when the town is at its most romantic.  The château entry price allows entry to 3 other attractions in the locality, although they are not really child oriented.

For the children: They will enjoy browsing the shops, alternatively head for the Haute Vilaine Watersports Base to the north east of the town –  the 150ha lake offers sailing or you can cycle around the perimeter.  The view of the Nétumières, a 15th century fortified manor-house, adds to the charm.
