Description: Etretat is a classical (perhaps slightly down at heel) seaside resort is neatly nestled between two sets of chalk cliffs. It was a popular spot in the past for impressionist artists including Eugène Boudin and Claude Monet. Today it is popular with walkers who have the choice of setting off along the cliffs either to the north or the south. The climbs are worth it for the views, especially when there are 3 impressive natural arches to see as well as a chalk needle.

Location: On the coast in Haute-Normandie (that is to the north of the Seine Estuary) about 30kms N of Le Havre.

Our Recommendations: Along the seafront there are a choice of restaurants/cafés all of which do variations on a theme of Moules/Frites. Back from the front there is also a restaurant that also has pizza on the menu for non fish eaters. Don’t miss a walk up either of the cliffs.

Parking is not easy and you are advised to use either of the car parks on the approaches to the town. These will both necessitate a reasonable walk into the town.

For the children: There is a stony beach. PLEASE TAKE GREAT CARE WITH CHILDREN ON THE CLIFF WALKS AS THERE ARE HUGE DROPS.
