Description: The Salt Train near Aigues Mortes gives tours of the salt pans and a part of the Camargue. There are 2 short tours available by either bus (1½ hours) or a land train (1¼ hours) or alternatively a longer tour lasting 2¼ hours. These all include a tour of the salt pans, the salt museum, a video and a visit to the shop, with the longer bus tour offering further insight into the flora and fauna of the Camargue.
There are set times for the tours – 5 a day for the shorter tours (2 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon). The ‘petit-train’ is the more popular option and gets booked up first so early booking is recommended. Either turn up early or if in the area pop in and pre-book for later in the day. The shorter tours are best to keep the children’s attention and the train definitely wins hands down over the bus, which could get very hot.
Location: The Salt Train is to the east of the D979 between Aigues-Mortes and Le Grau du Roi. It is clearly signposted to ‘Salins’ and ‘Listel’.
