Local Attractions

Tour de France comes to nearby Fontenay le Compte on 7th July 2018

The Lake at Mervent, within the forest has many activities including kayaking, sailing, fishing, a small beach, pedloes and there are many signed walks, cycling and bridleways.

The “prettiest village in South Vendée” Vouvant is just 11 km away (14 mins), The centre of the village is dominated by the 11th Century church, the Melusine Tower and ramparts overlooking the languorous rive Mere and the charming narrow streets house a plethora of artists’ studios. Vouvant also has shops, bars and restaurants and an English Tea Shop.

The Renaissance town of Fontenay le Compte is only 20 minutes’ drive away (15km) and services include: 2 large supermarkets, several smaller supermarkets, banks, mini-markets, many bar/restaurants, pizzeria, doctors, pharmacies, post office, bakers, butchers, many independent retail shops, a Saturday market, an indoor market and two retail parks. There are museums, a chateau, an arts centre, a cinema, a public swimming pool, go kart track and many more activities.

The major city of Niort is just 35 mins away and La Rochelle an hour’s drive away and the Atlantic beaches are just over an hour and fifteen minutes away.

There seems to be an almost boundless choice of sporting and leisure activities to take part in in the surrounding area. You can explore the region on foot, by bike and on horseback along the hundreds of kilometres of clearly marked paths and bridle ways. Fishing, swimming, sailing and other water sports are offered on the rivers and lakes and at the coast. For those with a little more adrenalin there are opportunities for paintball, go-karting and bungee jumping.

Sports include Walking, Tennis, Cycling, Swimming, Kayaking, Sailing, Fishing, Wind surfing, Sand Yachting, Horse Riding, Kite surfing, Karting and many Golf Courses.

Visit The Chateau de Terre in Fontenay Le Compte – The Chateau de Terre Neuve is an impressive castle dating from the 16th century that deserves a visit – lovingly furnished, and known for its fireplaces and ceilings.

Maris Poitevin stretches across the south of the Vendée. The Marais Poitevin is a strange, lazy landscape of fens and meadows, shielded by poplar trees and crisscrossed by an elaborate system of canals, dykes and slow-flowing rivers. Recently declared a regional park, it is known as “La Venise Verte” – the Green Venice – and indeed, farmers in this area frequently travel through the marshes in flat-bottomed punts as their fields lack dry-land access.

La Rochelle is one of the most beautiful places in France. There is an old port which still has the towers which used to protect it. The centre is particularly beautiful, with pale stone used for the majority of the buildings and many of the walkways. There are 2 basins in the old port which now have a large number of pleasure boats moored there. The fireworks for the 14th of July Bastille day celebrations are very impressive. There are many restaurants, many of them overlooking the harbour and the centre offers a very chic shopping experience.
