We are situated in the undiscovered region of Corrèze on the western edge of the Massif Central in France, surrounded by the rivers, lakes and forests of the ‘Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin’.  The area is traversed by a huge network of pathways. The moorlands, meadows, woodlands and rivers remain wild, secluded and unspoilt.

This stunning undulating landscape, with warm lakes, miles of empty roads and paths is also perfect for hiking, swimming, road cycling, mountain biking and running. The outdoor life is what attracted us to the ‘haute Corrèze’ and there are numerous outdoor activities available, from horse riding to hang gliding!

La Grange

The gîte nestles in one end of the beautiful granite barn, affording beautiful, tranquil views of the surrounding countryside.

As you enter the gîte, the impression of light and space is breath taking. The vaulted, double height ceiling, with the original oak ‘A’ frame and beams, soars high above the open plan living space. The three windows flood the room with light, giving views across the fields and woods.  A mezzanine constructed from locally sourced green oak creates two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The windows on south side look over our fields, and up across to the Monedieres mountains (the ‘mountains of light’). On the west gable a bi-fold door opens directly onto the large terrace, drawing you to views towards the woods and in the evening towards the setting sun.  On the north side there is the huge three-metre glass window with the integrated front door, with more views of fields and woods.  There are no neighbours and the gîte is not overlooked.

The exterior of the barn retains all the original character of this typically corrèzien barn. With its beautiful shaped granite corner coin stones, arched doorways and miniature windows it is incredible to think all this was originally built for cows!

The gîte has a small courtyard in addition to the terrace, accessed by wooden steps.

Offering complete privacy and seclusion, the gîte sits facing south at the edge of a three-acre field, which leads on to a further twenty acres of private woodland and pasture. You are very welcome to stroll around the field and into the woods. Children can play here or make dens in the woods!

Our land is bordered by a track, the ‘chemin’ that leads down to the lake –Lac De Barriousses.  This track can be walked or cycled, and links into many other tracks and footpaths to explore the area:  We can help you with maps and information.

For guests in summer,  Lac de Barriousses becomes Treign’Aqua Parc every July and August with large floating inflatables, and the chance for your family to get a unique Wipeout experience!

The nearest facilities such as cafes, bakeries, supermarket and fuel are 11 km away, in the medieval village of Treignac about ten minutes by car.

Kitchen and dining

There is a high quality fitted kitchen and spacious dining area. The kitchen has a SMEG electric oven and gas hob with extractor hood. Ample cupboards and a huge oak dresser hold a range of good quality kitchen equipment and white Limoges porcelain. An American style refrigerator with large fridge and freezing sections provide cold water and ice cubes on request. The Nespresso Coffee Machine works with all ‘nespresso’ or compatible pods.  A fully integrated dishwasher and washing machine are discreetly situated under the sink and worktop.

Bedrooms

There are two bedrooms, one leading from the living area under the mezzanine and one up on the mezzanine level accessed via the stairs.

Each room is simply furnished, showing off the original features. In each room there is a double and a single bed.  All beds have high quality english mattresses. The bedrooms can both be made up as either doubles or twins. The beds are fully made up with quality linen. There is ample storage including hanging space and plenty of sockets. A hairdryer is provided in each room.

Bathrooms

There are two shower rooms, one opposite the bedroom and one en-suite up on the mezzanine. Each has a Hansgrohe shower with glass screen, toilet and hand basin. Quality towels and shower mats are provided.

Living

With the kitchen and dining area in one corner, the rest of the open plan space is taken up with a sofa which seats four and two large armchairs.

There is a TV with ‘freesat’, and a DVD player with a selection of DVDs.  A selection of books and maps and local guides are available.

Internet is via relatively stable 4G (data not included)

Views are to the south and west through the bi-fold doors leading to the terrace and beyond to the setting sun.

Stairs lead to the mezzanine level.

Heating

The whole barn has under-floor heating powered by our huge wood boiler. The barn is well insulated by its thick granite walls, and the latest insulating materials in the roof keep it warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot!

Garden and outside

The large terrace is accessed from inside through the bi-fold doors or from outside. There are loungers and a table and chairs for dining on the terrace and an umbrella for shade.

Steps lead down to the courtyard. A rotary washing line and pegs are available.

You are more than welcome to explore the field and woods.  There are both fir trees and ancient mixed deciduous woodland; oak, hazel, chestnut and beech. The clean air ensures a huge variety of mosses and lichens and the tree trunks are green and hairy! In autumn we forage for mushrooms and can find several edible species.

Parking

There is ample parking for two large cars. Our road is ‘no through’ and just goes to us and the other two houses that make up our hamlet of ‘La Manigne’.

Visitor suitability

La Grange is suitable for families or adult groups. For families with young children a stair gate can be fitted. A travel cot and High chair can be provided on request.

There is a shower room and bedroom on the same level as the main living space, which could be suitable for persons with limited mobility. However, there are shallow steps down to the terrace and garden.  Please do contact us if you wish to ask more about this.

What our Guests say….

“Anna and Andrew’s Barn is a beautiful place! Very spacious, bright and arranged with great taste and modern elegance, the building is immersed in nature and silence which allows total disconnection. The bedding is comfortable, the kitchen fully equipped and the living area very cozy. The view from the terrace overlooks the breathtaking sunsets.”

Amazing gite + wonderful cycling = fabulous holiday.                    10 / 10
We stayed at Anna and Andrew’s beautifully and sympathetically renovated gite in July 2022. Located at the end of an extremely quiet country lane, the gite provided a wonderful base from which we were able to relax and explore the area, mainly on our road bikes.
The open plan gite is spacious, bright and airy, decorated and furnished to a very high standard and every home comfort you could possibly want is provided. The terrace on which we spent much of our time is large and provides stunning panoramic views across the countryside to the distant hills. A great restful place for eating outside and watching the sun set.
We chose this region for the cycling and were not disappointed. The road surfaces were exceptional and barely a car was seen on the smaller roads which followed the contours of the rolling hills though many pretty villages. The larger roads tended to be less undulating and also had little traffic on them.  There are also many marked mountain bike routes for different standards, for those preferring off-road cycling.”

“Andrew & Anna were fantastic hosts and we were thoroughly looked after. La Grange is stunning and so much bigger and more beautiful than the pictures show, so light and spacious. We have never stayed anywhere with such attention to detail everything has been thought of. The terrace and garden, again much bigger than we expected, was wonderful and we enjoyed lots of meals outside and watching the sunset. Our boys (11 & 13) loved the space and freedom; they especially enjoyed building dens in the wood. It’s the perfect place for peace and quiet yet only a short drive on lovely quiet roads to the pretty town or supermarket and the surroundings are magical and beautifully French.”

“We had a great stay at this lovely location in the countryside. Calm and serenity are undoubtedly at the rendezvous. The terrace has a beautiful view of the huge garden. Forest environment and close to several lakes.  In the house, everything is done to make you feel good: it is very tastefully decorated, well appointed and very clean, with very good quality materials and excellent bedding. Our hosts were very pleasant and attentive throughout the week.”

“A truly remarkable place. A restoration of the barn quality with proper materials and very good taste. The place is peaceful and the view from the house and the terrace is wonderful. The house is ideally located – while being in nature it is close to lakes and shops. Above all, a truly exceptional welcome and a real sense of service with a very high availability of owners to the guests while being discreet…. ”
