Description

A converted 17th century barn lovingly restored to retain its character and history. Originally built before the Vendee wars but burned by troops of the revolution in the 18th century, evidence of this can be seen on the stones of the walls where the colour has turned from creamy yellow to a rose hue.

It is spacious with lots of natural light and is furnished to the highest standard for 6 guests. A perfect base for exploring the Vendee and its history – or simply relax and enjoy rural France and its Atlantic coastline.

The barn is located near the village of Sigournais and its medieval château. The nearest large shopping centre is 10 minutes away in Chantonnay, although there is a small supermarket in Sigournais where you can buy virtually everything that you might need and this is only 5 minutes away. The Vendee is renowned for its excellent micro climate – as much sunshine as the Cote d’Azur.

Driving – we can offer discounted ferry tickets with Brittany Ferries. You could sail from Portsmouth, Plymouth or Poole to St Malo, Caen, Cherbourg or Roscoff. For air travel the nearest airports are Nantes, La Rochelle or Poitiers – you can book a car quite cheaply at any of these

Spend a day at the beaches of Sable d’Olonne, la Tranche or la Faute, take a boat out in the Marais Poitevin (green Venice of France). Go for lunch in the port of La Rochelle and antique hunt in the afternoon or see the sights. The Lac du Rochereau, 5 minutes from the Barn, is probably one of the most beautiful spots you have ever seen. You can swim from its beach, take a boat out, have a picnic, admire and paint the views, or try fishing for carp and sander.

Go for a day sightseeing or shopping in Nantes or Poitiers. Nearby there’s riding, horse racing, surfing, water sports, cycling, running, golfing and even night clubs for the energetic! Also there’s ballooning, bird watching, walks, forests, canoeing, many places of historic interest, markets, a zoo, villages, lots of bars and restaurants for the not so energetic.

Sigournais is only 25km from the Puy du Fou, the second biggest tourist attraction in France after the Eiffel tower. This is a spectacular day out for all the family. It celebrates the Vendee and it’s wonderful heritage.

The property is located in the Vendee, less than a 5 minute drive from Sigournais or 10 minutes from Chantonnay, which is the nearest large town, 45 – 60 minutes from Sable d’Olonne, la Rochelle, Nantes and Poitiers. The barn is in a hamlet nestling in the glorious countryside of the Vendee and dates from the seventeenth century. Many of the hamlet and it’s original occupants worked at the famous chateau de Sigournais. The location is the place to unwind completely, there is virtually no traffic but sometimes the occasional tractor! It is particularly peaceful. There are working farms close by and it is not unusual to see cows grazing in the fields around Sigournais. Over the field beyond the patio of the barn you can see the chateau and its original driveway through an avenue of trees. Sigournais is a 10 minute walk away. There is a general store, a hairdresser and a bar/restaurant. Chantonnay is about a 10-minute drive away where there are many shops including three large supermarkets. There is a general market on Thursday and a food market on Saturday. There is also a cinema and a swimming pool, plus numerous restaurants and bars.

Normally Saturday is changeover day but do talk to us about different days. We can let you have discounted ferry rates with Brittany ferries crossings. You can take shorter or longer breaks outside of June to September. We supply you with keys and everything will be prepared ready for your arrival.
