This is a great area for exploring castles and other historic attractions. Castles nearby include:
Carcassonne (28km, 35 mins.)
Peyrepertuse (100km, 1hr 50)
Queribus (53km, 1hr)
Lastours (30km, 40 mins.)
The medieval City of Carcassonne, famously being part of the film location for the 1980s ‘Robin Hood’ film is a great place to visit. Holy grail hunters will head for the town of Renne-le-Chateau to see the town where Abbot Sauniere was said to have found a treasure and documents ‘”so important as to change the face of the world'”.
From Cenne-Monesties the nearest market town is the charming Bram with it’s concentric streets, well worth a visit and there are many lakes to be discovered, such as the 17th century Lake Saint-Ferréol.
Of course the Languedoc-Roussillon has the largest wine production figures in the world and the ideal climate here ensures the Aude region makes the best tasting wine.
